Why Anti-Rockers Can Shove It

The majority of my school are into urban music. Only a handful can be classified as rockers (those who like alternative/rock music.)

Basically, if you like anything but hip-hop and R & B, whether it be ska, electronica or whatever, you're a rocker.

If you're a rocker, you're evil.

Yep, that's the general philosophy here. And it totally pisses me off.

Ok, let's look at the argument.

Alternative can be very abstract. (Ok not ALL alt rock bands are intelligent. The Presidents of the USA suck beyond belief. "Peaches come in a can, they were put there by a man, in a factory downtown.." or whatever.) But you'll understand what I mean if you look at bands like Garbage, Radiohead or Green Day, (especially their newest album, Nimrod.)

Alternative is also about music. There's usually a definite melodic line that you can actually sing along to.

Plus, most bands play their own instruments. (Usually guitar, keyboards and drums.)

Urban music is definitely not about the music. There's no melody in most rap songs. And soul all sound the same. Bands rarely play their own instrument. Those who do usually just put on a built-in beat on their electric keyboard.

So we can only conclude that urban music is about lyrics, right?

Rap lyrics are mostly about the type of gun that killed your best friend, or the number of whores you have in the backseat of your Mercedes. Soul is mostly the same: "Oh baby... I will love you forever... lalalala.. doooo doooo.... *high-pitched wailing*..."

But despite what type of music is better, what gives you the right to label me as 'evil' or 'screwed' just because I'm not into urban music? Whatever happened to the 'Diversity is Good' philosophy?

Now that you know what I think, you can just shove it.
